LISTENING PROMPT—Encouraging the Speaker
There are many principles and skills we need to adopt and practice when it comes to authentic communication. This month, I would like to practice encouraging the speaker. There are times when the speaker may have a difficult time expressing the thoughts they have. Encouraging the speaker is the skill and practice of asking questions, paraphrasing, and supporting them to say precisely what is on their mind. This does not mean interrupting or speaking for them, but supporting them in finding their voice, their right words to share.
TOPIC PROMPT—Is Reinvention Allowed?
In the 1970s I said and did things that, if they happened today, would be caught on camera and blasted over social media. I would be shamed, canceled, and unable to work in most organizations. Instead, I grew up, learned and changed, and am free to grow and manifest that change in everything I do.
Similar things are done now by others, but there are pictures, films, and phones as permanent and shareable eyewitnesses with the result that, even though the person changed, there seems to be no tolerance or forgiveness.
This month's conversation is about mistakes, forgiveness, and the seeming unavailability to learn, grow, change and reinvent yourself.
The prompt question is:
I would love to hear your thoughts. Please join me on Monday, December 13, from 6:30 to 7:45 pm PST. Register to receive the Zoom link for this free, informal event.
