The Girls' Locker Room by  Kathleen Buckstaff

Like a veteran who collapses when his own son registers for the draft, Kathleen experienced PTSD when her daughter reached the same age she was when she experienced sexual abuse at a New England prep school.

Kathleen will share some of the things she has learned on her journey around sex, love and healing.

Many of us have experienced past and present trauma around power and abuse. The wisdom this courageous story and message can offer will help everyone, especially young adults.

A soon-to-be Yellow Belt in Kung Fu San Soo, Kathleen is an award-winning author, columnist and artist. Her latest book is Get Savvy: Letters to a Teenage Girl about Sex and Love.

    Workshop outlineWomen's Assault Prevention

There are three skills every woman should know in order to defend herself. The first is the awareness to see and recognize that a potential attack is about to occur, as well as having a safety plan to avoid dangerous situations.

Second is having the assertiveness skills to "bring up" and say something about inappropriate behavior to someone who is "testing the waters" to see how far they can get with you.

The third is having the skills to physically stop someone from harming you. These are easy to learn and will stay with you for the rest of your life.

If your daughter has taken this class, please consider taking it yourself.  Becoming a role model for confidence, assertive behavior, and the courage to stand up for yourself physically and emotionally  is one of the best ways to ensure your daughter does the same.

Katie Sasso is a self-defense instructor and 7th-degree black belt in the art of Kung Fu San Soo. She has been working with André Salvage and Associates for over 15 years, sharing her knowledge of Assault Prevention and Street Safety. She works with schools around California and teaches weekend seminars in San Francisco to children, teens, and adults that focus on learning how to be aware, assertive and physically stop someone from harming them. Katie believes in living from her True Nature and shares with others the importance of listening to our intuition.

Prior to working with André Salvage and Associates, Katie graduated from the University of Oregon where she played collegiate soccer. She continued her soccer career playing for Sacramento Storm. She currently lives in the Bay Area with her husband and children.

Sharing Wisdom through the Art of Storytelling:

    Staying Grounded as a Teenager

    Date: Saturday, March 23rd

Time: 11:30 am to 12:15 pm

    Location:

    Presidio Letterman YMCA

    1152 Gorgas Ave.

    San Francisco, CA 94129

Sponsored by: André Salvage and Associates and Kung Fu San Soo

The world has a lot of ideas about who you should be—especially as a teenager.

Dorian Wiederholt Kassar has always thought about big philosophical ideas—but it was all theoretical; it just confused him. At fifteen, he asked a family friend to find him a therapist— “Someone weird. Really weird. Who won’t try to turn me into a conformist robot.” A week after his first session, Dorian started Kung Fu.

Dorian will share how he learned not to conform to or rebel against the world’s ideas but to instead discern what works for him.

If you are, know or have a teen who is struggling with identity, conforming or rebelling this lecture and discussion will be beneficial to you.

See the Wisdom Keeper page for more information.

Being a father of seven children (four of them Girls), I realize the safety concerns parents have for their children. Like many parents, I am tired of seeing young girls traumatized out of their innocence. I designed this workshop to help young girls have the awareness skills to avoid danger, the assertiveness skills to set boundaries and speak up when someone is testing the water to see if she is a victim, and the self-defense skills to stop someone from harming them.

This workshop will not cause young girls to become paranoid, but rather to become objectively aware of the dangers that exist. The workshop will empower them with tested skills to handle, avoid, control, or stop threatening situations.  Thank you for letting my team work with your daughter. ~ André
