| Workshop Outline One of the more challenging stages in a young man's life is the passage from adolescence to manhood. Navigating these internal changes in addition to all the external pulls of society, friends and communities is not easy. In addition to that there is a fear of potential violence that every young man experiences. The majority of violence that occurs is predictable, the key is to teach our children how not to become victims by providing them with the tools they need set boundaries, respect other’s boundaries and most importantly, to speak up when something is not right. The violence that was once experienced only on the streets is now in our High schools, Middle schools and, unfortunately, our Elementary schools. These random acts of violence cause many students to live in the fear that the worst will happen and if it does there is nothing anyone can do about it. This workshop is designed to give our children the real life tools necessary for their safety to survive the worst. Without instilling fear Andre Salvage will take groups of students through a mock attack and share with them ways to be safe and how to escape. We will discuss ways to avoid and recognize potential dangers and what to do if they are involved in, see or hear dangerous activity. During the workshop we will discuss:
- How to recognize potentially violent people
- Dealing with bullies
- Trusting your intuition
- How to report violence
- Creating a Safety Plan
- What to do if you are approached on the street
- How to tell someone your concerns
- What to do if you are approached on the street
- Who to talk to if you are feeling violent tendencies
Role plays:
- Escape techniques
- Duck and cover techniques
- What to do if you have been injured
Workshop Outcome School should be a place where students can learn the necessary skills for life. It should be a time of excitement and discovery, not a place where they worry if they will get to school safely, or whether or not someone will decide to harm them. The intended outcome of this course is to give students peace of mind by giving them real applicable tools to face problems and threats that affect them. |
